A QR Barcode Reader –

Posted by foreualways on February 14, 2012

If you go to my twitter account, you’ll see I have a QR Barcode as my profile picture. Now if you have a QR Code reader on your mobile device or desktop / laptop, you can go ahead and scan my profile picture in, it will give you my name and email, as well as a link to my WordPress blog.
Note: That if you have any of the a kind of apps that I refer to, or you just already know how to do this then you can scan any of the QR Codes I this article, well except for the small one in the second picture. I believe it too small….

Here a picture of a portion of my twitter profile….

You can go ahead and scan the QR Barcode if you have QR Barcode app on your cell phone. I made that code with a app for Google Chrome, called http://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/. This app can be used in any browser, well actually it just a link to a website that will generate the code for you, then you can download it, share it, etc!

Now you can go ahead and click on the Generate button and you get this….

I then downloaded it to my computer then uploaded it to my profile on Twitter!

I have since found a desktop QR Code reader / generator that I like. Note that I am using Windows Vista 64 bit, and I didn’t change / set up / or do anything that they suggested for Vista or Windows 7. If you go to the link then you will see a version for iPhone, Windows 7 Phone, Windows, Mac, Browser Extensions and Android. Along with a few other mobile os’s. I didn’t a version for Linux, or any variation of it, I also didn’t see a Blackberry version as well!

Here the link……http://www.quickmark.com.tw/En/basic/downloadMain.asp.

I have this desktop software, as well as the Android version of it and it works nicely! So far….Fingers crossed

Here the screen captures for the Quickmark software mentioned above. If I did it right they should explain themselves along the way!

This is for reading QR Codes from your desktop computer~

Step 1) Get the QR Code in your computer ready! I used Windows Explorer, click on Views, then select Extra Large Icons.

2012-01-30_035917 Step 2) Now be aware, that as scary as that picture is – it is me! OK now, that the webcam on my laptop. Just click where the blue arrow is pointing! You can check the other buttons out later.
Now once you click the Screen Capture Mode button (where the blue arrow pointing), you will drag the grey box over the QR Code to be read / decoded!
2012-01-30_041524 Step 3) Now when you drag this grey window over the QR Code, you should have it aligned up like in the picture to your left. Once you do that you can click the grey button – with the orange circle, underneath the code. It call the Decode button.
Clicking the camera button will take you back to the screen in Step 2 (note: that it should be your mug in the frame this time, not mine! Nyah-Nyah
2012-01-30_042614 Step 4) The last step – well depending what else you do with this, but the last step for this little tutorial. If you did everything right you will see that the QR Code has been decoded, er read!
Now this is the code I made, with the first link way back at the top!
This program here can do the same thing! As in Step 2 and click the Generate button to create your own code!

Well have fun and see what else you can create code for!

I am using this software as well as their Android counter – part, I also use Google Goggles, Barcode Scanner and ScanLife.
I like trying out multiple apps / software that serves the same purpose.

Security & Concerns

I should warn you there are some concerns when using a QR Code reader. Some people will scan a code and not realize that it will take them right to a negative/hacking/malicious websites!
The desktop software in the link above does not take you to a site. It show you the given information embedded in the QR-Code and if a link is there, you have to click on it to open your web browser!

Scanlife, will automatically open your web browser on your now Google Goggles, Barcode Scanner and Quickmark (the mobile version of the Quickmark desktop software shown above are all safe! They do not go to your web browser unless you press on the link.

Where to get the software/apps

  1. The Quickmark desktop and mobile app for Android, Win7 Phone, iPhone, etc can be found at the link above as well as the link here….http://www.quickmark.cn/En/basic/index.asp.
  2. The Barcode Scanner can be found here…https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.zxing.client.android.

Your App Store

Android Market – https://market.android.com/search?q=qr+code&c=apps
Windows Phone 7 – http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/search?q=qr+scanner&x=0&y=0
iPhone – I don’t know, I am NOT downloading iTunes to find out! But I am sure there has to be some there beside what I mentioned already!

Well I hope you found this useful!

Microblogging Or Miniblogging

Posted by foreualways on December 13, 2011

Microblogging (<—-click to go to Wikipedia site)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Microblogging is a broadcast medium in the form of blogging. A microblog differs from a traditional blog in that its content is typically smaller in both actual and aggregate file size. Microblogs “allow users to exchange small elements of content such as short sentences, individual images, or video links”.[1]

As with traditional blogging, microbloggers post about topics ranging from the simple, such as “what I’m doing right now,” to the thematic, such as “sports cars.”[citation needed] Commercial microblogs also exist, to promote websites, services and/or products, and to promote collaborationwithin an organization.

Some microblogging services offer features such as privacy settings, which allow users to control who can read their microblogs, or alternative ways of publishing entries besides the web-based interface. These may include text messaging, instant messaging, E-mail, or digital audio.

Some websites that are microblogging are Twitter(<—shameless plug to follow me), tumblr, sms messaging, and Google + and Facebook status are a form of microblogging.

Now while I knew this for the most part, I considered blogging from my cell phone microblogging (or miniblogging) as well. The screen on my android certainly is mini compared to my laptop! Rolling on the floor laughing

Now I use the WordPress mobile app and I have to say I love it! No it doesn’t replace my WordPress on my computer, but it let me do microblogging (status updates) on the fly. I mean do I always have to blog a full size story, and do I always have to tweet everything (well yeah I kind of do, I have twitter fever) but still I like posting small things, thoughts of the moment, a cute or funny picture or video of something I find amusing!

So I’ve added 2 new categories,  ‘Microblogging’ and ‘Status Updates’ and when I blog from my phone those are the categories I will use.

The screen on your left is the first when posting, and to the right is with the onscreen keyboard. Center below is sideways same screen. Of course with a slide out keyboard or a bigger screen you will have more real estate on the screen. I currently have a 3.2 inch screen.

image image image

To your left this is the second part of the first screen. Access to all your categories and tags. Password is optional as well.

To your left you can see what comes up when you decide to add media and it works very nicely, well at least it does for me. I haven’t tried the video part yet! Now to the right these are your choices when your ready to post!

While you can certainly download this app from here at WordPress, you can also download it from a number of other sites for the Android phones you can get it from the Android Market. You can read the reviews and seeing a few other WordPress android apps as well!
Well I use Android Only and that what the screen shot are from. They have all the apps for the different mobile platforms at the links I mentioned above!
OK Have a great day and a excellent holiday!
